Today I\u2019m adding all of the rivets and completing the engraving for the pendant back.<\/p>\n

\"Clockwork_Trilobite_Pendant_51\"<\/a>
\nAbove are the wires I\u2019m going to make my rivets out of, along with my blacksmith\u2019s \u201cnail header.\u201d\u00a0 The silver wire is 16 gauge silver, and the copper is 12 gauge.\u00a0 You can see the end of the wires where I\u2019ve melted little balls.\u00a0 These I\u2019ll make into a lost completed rivet heads with the nail header.\u00a0 That way, there\u2019s only one end of the wire I need to worry with to turn into a good looking and well doe rivet – a bit of risk reduction (sometime ask me about my Graceful Degradation Philosophy of Life).\u00a0 If you look closely at the holes in the trilobite underside, you should be able to see where I used larger drill bits and did a little countersinking – especially for the copper eye rivets, I want those to be flush on the bottoms.<\/p>\n

\nAbove are two close-ups of the nail header with completed rivets in place.\u00a0 In the top image you can see a completed silver rivet laying on the top.\u00a0 I just use a small ball peen banner to mash the little melted balls into rivet heads, then remove, trim the wire to length, and they are ready to be put into place as rivets.\u00a0 The larger copper rivets will be both eyes and additional security for my solder job.\u00a0 Belt-and-suspenders, remember?<\/p>\n

\nAbove is a sequence of images, starting with a bottom view, and then top views of installing the rivets, and peening over the wire ends.\u00a0 Should be self explanatory (I hope\u2026..).<\/p>\n

\nAbove are all the rivets in place, and the copper eye rivets carefully made flush with the surface.\u00a0 I want as little of these to come in contact with the wearer\u2019s skin as possible.<\/p>\n

\nHere I\u2019ve installed the trilobite upside down in a holder for engaging.\u00a0 I\u2019ve used Thermolock\u2122 plastic (sold by GRS Tools) to hold it securely place – heating with a heat gun to install or release is quick and easy.<\/p>\n

\nIn the above sequence of images I\u2019ve textured and engraved the details on the back (upper left) , added a quick patina and polished it back quite a bit to get an inkling of how it will look when completed.\u00a0 The client suggested a wind-up key fixture on the back – good call!\u00a0 It\u2019s starting to look very SteamPunk\u2026\u00a0 Next comes the exciting part – carving and engraving the top.<\/p>\n
