Poniard &#8211; Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, the <a href=\"http:\/\/sterlingsculptures.com\/wp\/?p=2374\">Nazgul Holdout Stiletto<\/a> met with such success that I succumbed to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bladegallery.com\/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=721&amp;cat=Sterling%2C+Tom\">Bladegallery.com<\/a> folks suggesting I make a really big and scary one. \u00a0This one is a dragonslayer&#8217;s poniard, basically an armor piercing dagger designed to penetrate through a dragon&#8217;s tough and thick scales.<\/p>\n<p>This one is more than 22 inches long, and is made from half inch square 1045 carbon steel bar.<\/p>\n<p><img data-attachment-id=\"2941\" data-permalink=\"http:\/\/sterlingsculptures.com\/wp\/?attachment_id=2941\" \/><br \/>\nI decided a Blacksmith Cube Twist, also sometimes called a Rubik\u2019s Cube Twist,\u00a0would make a cool looking handle, just like the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sterlingsculptures.com\/wp\/?p=2374\">Nazgul Holdout Stiletto<\/a>, only lots bigger. \u00a0Above, I&#8217;ve begun the process by deeply engraving a center groove on each of the four faces of the 1045 carbon steel bar. \u00a0I cut a v-groove in a piece of wood to hold the bar &#8220;on the diamond&#8221; while I cut down to two of the engraved grooves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sterlingsculptures.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Dragonsbane_Poniard_2.jpg\"><img data-attachment-id=\"2940\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAbove, you can see the two sets of cross cuts (cut on opposite sides at 45 degrees). \u00a0The bar is now ready to heat to yellow heat, place in a vise and twist 360 degrees, creating the illusion of the tumbling blocks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sterlingsculptures.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Dragonsbane_Poniard_3.jpg\"><img data-attachment-id=\"2939\"
