Caterpillar Knife &#8211; Part 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since the last post I hardened and tempered the little knife, and spent some time getting the scale and crud from the heat treating process off of it.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/sterlingsculptures.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Blacksmith_Caterpillar_Knife_10.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/sterlingsculptures.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Blacksmith_Caterpillar_Knife_12.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Blacksmith_Caterpillar_Knife_12\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/sterlingsculptures.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Blacksmith_Caterpillar_Knife_12.jpg?resize=640%2C417\" alt=\"\" it&#8217;s time to add some gold highlights. \u00a0Above, I&#8217;ve engraved a small decorative line, and undercut the bottom on each side. \u00a0This will allow me to pound some soft, 24k gold wire into the grooves, and the undercuts will let the gold flow into them, trapping the gold. \u00a0Above, I&#8217;ve pounded gold into about half of the engraved line.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><br \/>\nHere&#8217;s the other side, finished pounding the gold. \u00a0Now, I&#8217;ll remove the excess, and smooth the surface. \u00a0Once the surface is smooth, I&#8217;ll engrave really fine lines into the steel along the edges.<\/p>\n<p><a \u00a0Next, I&#8217;ll inlay copper rivets into the three holes in the handle, and &#8220;mushroom&#8221; over both sides so the copper becomes captive in the steel.<\/p>\n<p><a
